A number of factors need to be  taken into consideration when selecting the appropriate coolant, namely:


Type of Material being machined (e.g. Metals, Plastics Composites, Graphites etc.)

Machining Process (e.g. Drilling, Grinding, Milling, Broaching etc.)

Water “Hardness” (Hard, Medium, Soft)

Water Quality (Bacterial Levels)

Component Finish

Permissible Extreme Pressure Additives (Sulphur, Chlorine, Phosphorous, Esters)

Major Company Approvals (Aerospace, Electronic, Food and Medical Companies)

Customer Acceptance of: Biocides, Boron, Formaldehyde, Secondary Amines

Customers Preference for Milky, Translucent Coolants, Transparent, Colour and Odour

Need for: Corrosion Inhibitors/Passivator etc.

Customer’s Fluid Management Practices

Sump Life Expectations

Soap formation

Coolant Pump Pressures (Foaming issues)

Cutting Tools/Inserts Employed e.g. Carbon Tool, Steel High Speed Steel, Tungsten Carbide, Diamonds & Ceramics.


With so many parameters to take into account the selection of the best coolant to use is not simply a £/Litre decision.  


Some lubricant companies are happy to simply supply product, however, this is very short sighted Strategy.  Goldcrest takes its responsibilities seriously.  Yes it supplies coolant concentrates speedily but it helps train their customers to use the products correctly in accordance with the Health & Safety regulations, thus keeping the production staff safe with regular checks being made on the quality of the emulsions and advising on corrective action.  When the product has finally need to be replaced we can organise the safe disposal.


Experience maintaining coolants and product knowledge are crucial in the selection process and the Goldcrest Team has the experience. In addition it can call upon the Technical input from all the major players in this market.
